There's a tea my grandmother used to give us when we were going to school, and after dinner. I didn't know the importance of that tea until I moved to Canada.
Every morning before school, my grandmother put this tea on the table with our breakfast. Then every evening after dinner, there it was again. I was annoyed because I wanted the fancy drinks my friends were having instead, but I kept quiet as there were so many of us and I knew money was tight.
My Grandmother, Miss Ida, was very resourceful. She worked a full-time job and still found time to plant and farm. She would even find time to go and sell her goods in the farmers market. She made sure every grandchild and the strangers who showed up in our yard everyday had a cup of tea.
When I say we didn't have much, I mean it; we used to eat chicken skin for dinner. Miss Ida stretched the flour, and expanded the rice miraculously - she wasted nothing. Sometimes, there would be about 10 kids in the yard and she managed to feed us all.
She always had tea. She gave us the best tea to settle the stomach, the best tea for cramps, the best tea for sleep.
When I came to Canada, I stopped drinking tea and my body knew it. Something felt off. Unsettled, not right. I felt like a stranger in my own body. Just not me! Some years later whilst continuing to struggle with my body and mind, I had a nostalgic moment remembering my grandmother, and then it hit me.
The tea was never "just tea".
It was my grandmother's way of taking care of us with the little she had.
Miss Ida lived to be 93 years old, and I'm so proud to honor her struggle and legacy with this tea in her memory.
I smiled as I remembered the first time I tasted this blend, and it took me back to the woman, to my hero, the grandmother who knew how to stretch 1 dollar.
